Training at West Winds Farm begins with groundwork. This entails getting the horses very responsive on the ground in the halter rope. The purpose of groundwork is to establish a safe relationship between horse and handler. This is the building block for the development of a solid partnership under saddle. A horse that is "halter broke" is respectful of the handler, understands yielding from pressure, being caught, leading, backing, bending, turning, standing quietly for the farrier, standing tied, grooming, clipping and trailer loading. In general, horses learn how to interact peacefully and clearly with the handler. These horses are a delight to be around as well as being safe and happy. This is the foundation for developing a riding horse regardless of the discipline.
Training under saddle is geared toward the development of correct basic passes, athleticism, balance and suppleness. Depending on the needs and desires of each horse and rider, the training program is designed to meet individual goals from increasing confidence and technical skills to enhancing performance.
