Each year we hope for a winter with a lot of snow and a spring with enough moisture and sunlight to grow a bountiful crop of mostly brome grass hay. Then, we fertilize in March, start irrigating in April or May and wait for nature to have its way to grow the grass thick and nutritious.
We have the best farmer we could ever hope for who comes and cuts, rakes and bales and stacks the hay into small bales with much care, kindness and expertise. At the time of cutting (usually June), we wish for hot, dry days to cure the hay before it is baled and put up. After that, it can rain again!
The number of bales we put up each year varies. The farmer uses the stack wagon to put it into the hay barn or outside under a tarp. Each stack contains 160 bales. Each bale weighs between 50 and 70 pounds.
This year we are concentrating on revitalizing the soil and resting some fields to rejuvenate them therefore, we will have fewer bales for sale. Prices vary depending upon the year.
